About Columbia Second Chance

Columbia Second Chance is the animal rescue behind Woofstock, and all proceeds from the event go toward caring for its animals. According to its website, its adoption center is located at 24687 Highway 179 in Boonville, with adoption hours on Saturdays from 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. and Sundays from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. (the adoption center is closed the day of Woofstock). Events like this one are a great way to meet the team, learn about adoptable pets, and support rescue work in mid-Missouri.

As someone whose own German Shepherd came from a shelter, events that support rescue animals are close to my heart.

Shopping the Local Vendors

One of the best parts of a dog festival is discovering local businesses: treats, toys, collars and leashes, grooming products, pet portraits, and more. A few shopping tips:

  • Bring a mix of cash and cards, since small vendors vary in what they accept.
  • Bring a tote bag so your hands stay free for the leash.
  • Ask about ingredients before buying treats, especially if your dog has allergies or a sensitive stomach, and introduce new treats slowly at home.
  • Follow your favorite vendors on social media so you can find them again after the event.

Is Your Dog Ready for a Festival?

Woofstock is dog-friendly, but crowds, live music, other dogs, and lots of new smells can be a lot for some pups. Your dog will likely enjoy it if they:

  • Stay relaxed around strangers and unfamiliar dogs
  • Handle loud noises, like amplified music, without panicking
  • Walk well on a leash in busy places
  • Are healthy and up to date on vaccinations

If your dog is reactive, fearful, recovering from an illness, a very young puppy who has not finished vaccines, or a senior who tires easily, it is perfectly okay to enjoy Woofstock on your own and give your dog a cozy afternoon at home. A walk or drop-in visit while you are out keeps their day on track.

What to Bring for Your Dog

  • A standard leash, 4 to 6 feet, rather than a retractable leash in crowds
  • Collar with ID tags and up-to-date microchip information
  • Water and a collapsible bowl
  • Waste bags, and plenty of them
  • High-value treats to reward calm behavior
  • A towel or mat so your dog has a comfortable spot to rest near the music

Tips for a Great Day at Woofstock

  • Exercise first. A good walk before the event helps your dog settle in.
  • Arrive early if your dog prefers smaller crowds.
  • Ask before greeting. Always ask other owners before letting dogs meet, and keep greetings short.
  • Give your dog breaks. Step away from the stage and busy areas every so often.
  • Watch body language. Yawning, lip licking, a tucked tail, or pulling toward the exit all mean your dog has had enough.
  • Leave on a good note. It is better to head home while your dog is still happy than to stay until they are overwhelmed.
